Methodology
Every use-case page on this site recommends a tool. We didn't want those recommendations written by hand — too easy to drift toward whatever we like, and you'd have no way to check our work. So we built a scoring model and let it decide. Here's exactly how it works.
1. The feature catalog
We maintain a database of 124 features across 19 groups (core counting, counter management, data export, history, mobile UX, accounts, pricing model, and more). Each feature has a short, testable definition — "supports multiple named counters on one page", "exports a CSV with timestamps", "works offline after first load".
2. Competitor evaluation
We track 45 competing tools — every mainstream online tally counter we could find, plus niche tools in adjacent categories (tasbih counters, rosary counters, meditation timers, etc.).
For each (tool × feature) pair, the tool earns one of four marks:
- Yes — feature is available, free, and works as described.
- Paid — feature exists but is gated behind a paywall.
- Partial — feature exists with meaningful limitations.
- No — feature is not available.
These marks come from AI-assisted evaluation of each tool's public surface. For each (tool × feature) pair, an AI model reads the tool's public pages and looks for the exact phrase that supports — or fails to support — the feature. Every "yes" stores the verbatim quote, so anyone can audit the claim by clicking through to the source page. Quotes that don't appear character-for-character on the source page are automatically downgraded to "no", which makes feature hallucination structurally impossible.
Re-evaluation is manual, not automated. We deliberately don't re-scrape competitor sites on a schedule — that would be both rude (constant automated traffic to other companies' infrastructure) and unnecessary (real product changes don't happen week-over-week). When a tool ships a major change, or when someone tells us via the submission form that we've got something wrong, we re-evaluate that tool. The data otherwise sits as-of the date shown on each verdict, which is honest about what we know and when we knew it.
3. Use-case scoring
Not every feature matters for every use case. For each of the 49 use cases we cover, a curated subset of features is marked as relevant. A bird-watching counter doesn't need cloud sync; a behavior-tracking workflow does.
For each (tool × use case) pair, we compute:
score = (yes count) × 1.0 + (partial count) × 0.5 + (paid count) × 0.6
The highest-scoring tool wins. If there's a runner-up that offers at least one relevant feature the winner lacks, it's surfaced as a "Strong alternative" — because sometimes the right answer is "use the second-best tool because it has the one thing you need".
4. Verdict copy
The 2-3 sentence verdict on each page is written by an AI model, but it's constrained tightly: it can only reference features that appear in the data above. It cannot invent keyboard shortcuts, claim specific UI behaviors, or make up statistics. If a verdict says "X wins because it has Y, Z, and W" — those features really are present in our database, with an evidence trail behind each one.
5. The DigitalTallyCounter relationship
TallyCounter.org is built and maintained by the team behind DigitalTallyCounter.com. We don't hide it; we structure around it. The scoring model is identical for our own tool and every competitor. When DigitalTallyCounter scores highest for a use case, it wins; when it doesn't, it doesn't. The recommendations vary across use cases for exactly this reason — if every page picked the same tool, the model wouldn't be doing real work, and you wouldn't have any reason to trust the next recommendation.
6. Updates & corrections
If a tool ships a new feature and we missed it, or we marked a feature wrong, the fastest path is to tell us via the submission form with a link to the relevant page on the tool's site. We re-evaluate that one tool, re-run the scoring, and the affected use-case pages update automatically. The whole pipeline is deliberately kept manual — we'd rather have stale-but-honest data than a cron that hammers other companies' servers every week.
